(AP) ? Former Prime Minister Tony Blair said Monday that he couldn't stand up to the Britain's media tycoons while in power, telling an official media ethics inquiry that doing so could have dragged his administration into a political quagmire.

Blair's testimony, briefly interrupted by a heckler who burst into the courtroom to call him a war criminal, shed light on the canny media strategy used to create the "New Labour" image that repackaged his party as more mainstream and business friendly, bringing it back to power after 18 years in opposition.

Blair, who was premier from 1997 to 2007, enjoyed strong press support in his early years, including backing from media mogul Rupert Murdoch's influential newspapers. But he found himself isolated near the end of his decade in power due in large part to his unpopular decision to join the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq.

The greying ex-prime minister said he long had concerns about what he once described as the "feral beasts" of the media but had to tread carefully where press barons were concerned.

"I took a strategic decision to manage these people, not confront them," he told Lord Justice Brian Leveson, who is leading the inquiry. "I didn't say that I feared them ... (but) had you decided to confront them, everything would have been pushed to the side. It would have been a huge battle with no guarantee of winning."

Leveson's inquiry was set up following revelations of phone hacking at Murdoch's News of the World tabloid, a scandal which has rocked the British establishment and raised questions about whether top politicians helped shield Murdoch ? and the media in general ? from official scrutiny.

Blair's time at the top has come under particular scrutiny because of the unlikely ? and mutually beneficial ? alliance the media-savvy prime minister forged between his left-wing Labour Party and Murdoch's News Corp. ? a company whose holdings include the populist The Sun newspaper and the right-wing Fox News network.

Blair became so friendly with Murdoch that he was chosen to be the godfather to one of Murdoch's children. The Blair government's relationship with Murdoch has since been described by several former colleagues as having been too close for comfort.

The former prime minister made no apologies for courting Murdoch, saying he was just one of several media tycoons who could make life difficult if they weren't happy with a position he was taking.

He denied doing any kind of deal with Murdoch, "either express or implied" ? although he acknowledged calling the Australian-American tycoon ahead of elections to make sure that Labour could count on News Corp.'s support.

Blair's testimony was interrupted when a heckler burst in through a secure corridor behind Leveson, shouting: "This man should be arrested for war crimes!" before being removed by security. British media reported that the heckler, who identified himself as filmmaker David Lawley Wakelin, had previously heckled Blair over the 2003 invasion of Iraq at a televised question and answer session.

Such incidents ? a testament to the divisiveness of Blair's decision to go to war in Iraq ? are routine. Last week, a handful of protesters yelling out "warmonger" interrupted his speech at Colby College in Maine.

Blair, wearing a navy suit and sporting a tan, watched impassively. Leveson, looking ruffled, said he would investigate how the man managed to sneak in to the restricted area.

Wakelin ? who was released without charge ? later told London radio that he took advantage of an unguarded door in the maze-like Royal Courts of Justice, where the inquiry is being held.

Blair spent a considerable amount of time challenging the reputation his lieutenants built up for bullying, manipulation, and "spin" in his decade in office.

Still, he acknowledged that politics and media had become "far more rude and brutal ? and in a sense crude ? in its interaction."

Blair's appearance kicked off an important week at the judge-led inquiry. Current ministers, including Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt, Education Minister Michael Gove and Home Secretary Theresa May, are due to testify in the coming days.

Prime Minister David Cameron is also expected to testify before Leveson, whose inquiry was set up last year after it emerged that reporters at the Murdoch-owned News of the World tabloid had routinely hacked into the phones of public figure and crime victims.

The scandal has rocked Britain's establishment, leading to the arrest or resignation of dozens of journalists, media executives, political operatives and police, prison and military officials. It's also exposed a pattern of wrongdoing across the British press, from bribery to blackmail.

The investigation continues: As Blair was testifying, police said they'd arrested a 42-year-old woman who was not identified on suspicion of money laundering offenses linked to the hacking scandal. She was later released on bail.

Russian FM: Both Syrian sides to blame for deaths

(AP) ? Russia further backed away from its support of Syrian President Bashar Assad on Monday, saying his government bears the main responsibility for the violence in the country and calling for a full investigation into its role in the deaths of more than 100 civilians in Houla.

"Both sides have obviously had a hand in the deaths of innocent people, including several dozen women and children. This area is controlled by the rebels, but it is also surrounded by government troops," Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said after talks in Moscow with visiting British Foreign Secretary William Hague.

Lavrov spoke a day after Russia agreed to join the rest of the U.N. Security Council in blaming the Syrian government for attacking residential areas in Houla, a collection of villages near the central city of Homs. The council, however, avoided saying who was responsible for the massacre of at least 108 men, women and children.

Lavrov said there was no doubt that government forces had used artillery and tanks to shell Houla, but he noted that many of the dead appeared to have been shot at close range or tortured.

"The guilt has to be determined objectively," he said. "No one is saying that the government is not guilty, and no one is saying that the armed militants are not guilty."

In some of Russia's harshest criticism of Assad to date, Lavrov said his government "bears the main responsibility for what is going on" because it is failing to provide for the security of Syrian citizens. He hedged the criticism by claiming that Syria's government is facing an increased threat from terrorists, whose bombings have the "clear signature of al-Qaida."

Alexei Malashenko, a Middle East expert with the Carnegie Moscow Center, said Russia can no longer defend Assad's government and may be warning him that he needs to change his approach.

"Bashar Assad is driving himself and Russia into a corner," Malashenko said. "If this goes on, Russia will have no other option" but to pull its support. "Bashar has definitely gotten the sense that he may lose Russia's sympathy and he may step back a bit."

Lavrov and Hague both called for greater efforts to implement a peace plan put forward by special envoy Kofi Annan, who arrived in Damascus on Monday for talks with Assad and other senior Syrian officials. Annan's six-point plan calls on both sides to respect a cease-fire.

"It's right, as Sergey Lavrov has just done, to call on all parties to cease violence, and we are not arguing that all violence in Syria is the responsibility of the Assad regime, although it has the primary responsibility for such violence," Hague said.

Lavrov added that "we don't support the Syrian government, we support Kofi Annan's plan."

The Russian envoy called for everyone in the international community to exert more pressure on both sides to implement Annan's plan, saying it was not clear from talks with opposition members that they were getting the message that the plan had full international support. He said talk about the need for Assad to step down cast doubt on the West's commitment to the Annan plan and encouraged the opposition to keep up the fight.

Hague, however, confirmed that Britain still believes Assad should stand aside.

"But the important thing is that the Annan plan is pursued in whatever way it can be pursued," he said. "The alternatives are the Annan plan or ever-increasing chaos in Syria, and a descent closer and closer to all-out civil war and collapse."

China on Monday also condemned the killings of civilians in Houla and called for an end to the violence, but gave no indication it was rethinking its strategy toward the fighting in Syria.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin said that Beijing fully supports Annan's mediation efforts and the UN monitors.

The protests against Assad began in March 2011 and turned into an uprising after his government responded with a violent crackdown on dissent. The U.N. estimated that at least 9,000 people were killed in the first year of the conflict, but hundreds more have been killed since then.

5 Reasons to Have an Internet Marketing Blog - After1

Thursday, May 17th, 2012 at 12:25 pm ?

An Internet marketing blog has been a popular marketing tools for well over a decade now. It used to be a way for people to voice their opinions and invite comments and social interaction; and still is! But what started as a form of chat between a group of like-minded individuals, has become a valuable tool for promoting goods and services. An Internet marketing blog has become an essential tool for anyone doing business online. Here are 5 reasons why that is so:

1. Maintaining an Internet Marketing blog is easy to do

Blogging is just about the simplest way to publish your opinions and share knowledge. There are no special skills required! If you can read and type on a computer, and basically string a sentence together, you can maintain a blog. It?s your blog so you can write whatever you like. Your only real restriction is you need to write something that other people will want to read. The more people you get to visit your blog, the more popular it becomes which in turn attracts even more visitors. That?s not as much of a challenge as it might seem. You want visitors who are interested in the same thing you?re interested in; or selling. So you can think of blogging like talking to friends who share the same passion as you.

2. Blogging is authentic

When other marketers are pushing their advertising and trying to convince us we want what they offer, the blogger is just having a conversation. In most cases, a blog is (and should be) genuine information written by genuine people; that?s true for an Internet marketing blog as much as any other. So even if you?re talking about a product or service, you can talk about your experience with that product or service. Or you can encourage other people to talk about their experiences with your product or service. We all have a lot more faith in a genuine recommendation than we do in a sales pitch.

3. It costs nothing to create an Internet marketing blog

Anyone can set up a blog for free; and it?s extremely easy. You can sign up for a free account at WordPress.com and Blogger and have an Internet marketing blog online in a matter of minutes. It?s just a matter of working through the online setup wizard that guides you step-by-step. Alternatively, you can have a WordPress blog from WordPress.org on your own website. Most web hosting providers offer a simple way to set that up. And it?s usually offered as part of the standard web hosting package so there?s no cost there either.

4. A blog helps you to become an authority in your field

Whatever subject or niche that you are blogging about, it?s something that you have a lot of knowledge in right? If you don?t when you start out, you certainly will after you?ve done the research to find content for your blog. That makes you an authority in your field. And your authority builds as your knowledge builds. Pretty soon, people will start coming to your blog to find answers to their questions as word spreads about your blog.

5. A blog can increase your circle of influence

When people who read your blog decide that you?re honest and trustworthy, they will want to tell their friends all about you. This is particularly true of course if you have some entertaining blog posts. If you?re passionate about the subject, let your passion come through in your writing. You could soon see your blog readership growing virally.

These are just five reasons to have an Internet marketing blog. I?m sure you can probably think of more. If you?re not blogging yet, I suggest you get started right away. It?s dead easy to do and can be fun. Happy blogging!

Americans spending a bit more as gas prices fall

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Americans are starting to see some relief from higher gas prices, a change that could revive the economy in the months ahead.

Consumer prices were flat in April, largely because of a decline in gas prices. Lower prices at the pump may be combining with steady job growth to power more spending on big purchases.

Sales of autos, furniture and electronics all rose in April. And Americans spent more at restaurants and bars ? generally a sign of confidence in the economy.

"Consumer spending looks to have started the second quarter on a solid footing," said Paul Ashworth, an economist at Capital Economics.

Despite the strength in key areas, overall retail sales increased just 0.1 percent last month, the Commerce Department said Tuesday. That modest gain followed two stronger months in February and March.

Cheaper gas offset some of the gains in big purchases. The mild winter was also a factor. In the previous two months, it boosted sales in areas such as building materials and gardening supplies. Spending in those categories fell sharply in April.

Still, economists were encouraged by the details in the report. Excluding autos, gas station sales and spending on building materials, so-called core retail sales increased 0.4 percent, a modest gain.

"All the categories that showed gains are positive signs for consumer spending going forward," said Leslie Levesque, senior economist at IHS Global Insight. "The categories where there were declines were mainly a payback for the warmer weather."

The positive signs come six months before voters will decide whether to give President Barack Obama a second term in an election focused heavily on the economy. Obama is trying to convince voters that the economy is on an upswing. His Republican rival, Mitt Romney, counters that the unemployment rate is a still-high 8.1 percent and argues that Obama's policies are weakening the recovery.

Recent job growth has contributed to higher consumer confidence. Employers have added 1 million jobs in the past five months, though the pace of gains has slowed recently.

Another reason to be optimistic: gas prices are falling after spiking earlier this year. The national average dropped to $3.73 per gallon on Tuesday, about 17 cents cheaper than a month ago, according to a survey by AAA. Sales at gas stations fell 0.3 percent in April.

"We had expected gas prices to be elevated until Memorial Day," Levesque said. "The fact that they have already retreated so much is a very good sign. It alleviates the strain on consumers' pockets."

Cheaper gas also kept inflation tame. Gas prices fell a seasonally adjusted 2.6 percent in April, the Labor Department said. That offset mild increases in the cost of food, housing, and clothes.

Overall, the consumer price index was flat. Excluding volatile food and gas costs, so-called "core" prices rose 0.2 percent.

In the past 12 months, prices have risen 2.3 percent, the smallest gain in more than a year.

Mild inflation leaves consumers with more money to spend, which tends to boost economic growth. It could also encourage businesses to invest more in their stockpiles this spring.

Businesses took a more cautious approach to restocking in March, a trend that has helped slow economic growth this year. Companies' inventories grew just 0.3 percent, the Commerce Department said in a separate report. It was the smallest increase in four months.

When companies cut back on stockpiling, it slows factory production and growth tends to decline.

But if retail spending keeps rising, businesses will likely step up their restocking. That could boost growth in the April-June quarter.

Two other reports provided some reason for optimism. A measure of manufacturing activity in New York state jumped in May, reversing a large drop in April. Measures of new orders and employment rose.

And homebuilder confidence reached its highest level in five years in May, according to the National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo housing market index. Builders reported greater sales and higher traffic from prospective buyers.

The retail sales report represents the government's first look at consumer spending for the April-June quarter. Consumer spending is closely watched since it accounts for 70 percent of economic activity.

Consumer confidence has improved as gas prices have fallen. The University of Michigan said Friday that its Consumer Sentiment index for May rose to its highest level since January 2008.

In the January-March quarter, overall economic growth slowed to an annual pace of 2.2 percent. That's down from the 3 percent increase in the October-December period, but faster than last year's 1.7 percent pace.

Economists are concerned that income growth continues to lag behind inflation. That could weaken further if job gains don't pick up in coming months. Workers' average hourly earnings have risen just 1.3 percent in the 12 months that ended in April. And adjusted for inflation, average hourly pay declined 0.5 percent from April 2011 to April 2012.

Many economists expect job growth will pick up in the next few months. But few see it being as strong as earlier this year. That should keep consumers spending and help the economy grow at a moderate pace.

Image

The USPS has announced that it'll refuse to ship any gear containing lithium ion batteries overseas. The postal service believes combusting power packs have caused two fatal cargo plane crashes since 2006 -- hence the ban, which takes effect from May 16th. Anyone wishing to ship the latest tech to those living or serving overseas will have to use another shipping company -- although the ban might be relaxed in 2013, once safety testing has been carried out.

Hollie Cavanagh on American Idol Elimination: No Complaints!

Hollie Cavanagh "just kind of knew." That's what she told reporters not long after hearing her name announced as the latest American Idol elimination. That was the feeling she had when she woke up.

So, once the premonition became a reality, how did Hollie feel?

Hollie Cavanagh Sings Goodbye

Honestly, if you'd asked me a couple of weeks ago I would've been upset and in tears, but you can't really complain when you are at the top four," she said. "There were so many people previously in the competition that would have died to have been in this spot, so I am proud of myself at this point."

That's certainly the right attitude to take, but try telling it to Joshua Ledet! He was more of a mess than Cavanagh after the results were unveiled.

"I don't know why the boy was crying, I'll get to see him in like two days!" Hollie laughed.

Cavanagh added that she truly has "no idea" who among the final three will win, but she does have nothing but nice things to say about the judges.

"They said how proud they were of me and how far I had come. Now I'm just looking to the future and see what the future brings. I don't want to look down as I have no regrets - I saw myself grow through the whole process and I'm proud of myself. I don't take anything back."

CTIA 2012: a look back at our favorite devices

Image

CTIA 2012 is wrapping up and we thought we'd spend a few minutes reminiscing about some of the more interesting devices we had a chance to see for the first time or that were launched here. Unfortunately for us -- and thereby for you, too -- the show lacked the bite we've seen at previous events, in fact it barely registered a nibble. We did catch up with five products we'd like to highlight so follow on after the break for our recap.
